NYIGA Basic Gang Specialist Certification Course
 
The course will be taught by an expert in the field of youth violence and gangs. This course is open to all members of the association, as well as others interested in certification who work in fields related to youth violence. 
 
Course Outline:
·        The course will provide a brief history and development of gangs in the United States (local gangs, prison gangs, trends)
·        Indicators of gang activity (graffiti, signs, symbols, hand signs, etc.)
·        How to identify gangs and gang members and how to properly document them;
·        This course will also prepare individuals to testify in court;
·        Intervention and Prevention techniques;
·        School Safety Concerns;
·        skills necessary to develop a basic gang class pertaining to the guidelines set forth by the New York State Unified Court System and New York State Dept of Education.
 
Duration of course: 5 hours
 
A 100-question written examination must be successfully completed. There must be a minimum grade of 75% (75) attained on the examination to pass. Students who do not achieve at least 75% on the exam will be allowed to review their exam and re-take the exam one (1) time. However, if the student does not pass the re-take, they
will NOT receive a certificate or any other items associated with successfully completing the course. There is a one (1) hour time limit for exam.
 
If the person passes the exam their name will be added to a database showing that they have passed the NYGIA Basic Gang Specialist Certification class. This information will be kept on record and a certified letter can be requested to be sent to any organization or court in New York State showing that you have successfully completed the course.
 
This class is only open to the first 100 people who register for the class. The class will be given on Friday, July 18, 2008, at the 2nd Annual NYGIA Gang Training Conference in Rochester, NY at a fee of a $125 per person (members) and $150 (non members)
